Job Summary:

The position will work in partnership with a college and career readiness team to serve as a coach and mentor to students. Provides direct supportive academic services and college/career readiness guidance to students. The position coordinates college-and-career-related programming to meet organizational objectives in a timely manner and closely monitors progress towards these goals and takes appropriate remedial action when necessary. Successful applicants are leaders with strong organizational and interpersonal skills. This position is required to work frequent evening hours and occasional weekends. This is a grant-funded position through the US Department of Education.



Essential Functions:

Case management

    Manage a caseload of approximately 20 high school students, providing advising services focused on rigorous academic profiles, the high school to college transition, college persistence, college completion, and career readiness
  • Maintain frequent and regular contact with caseload to monitor progress and to troubleshoot academic, financial and socio-emotional issues associated with high school completion and college matriculation and persistence
  • Develops and implements a transition plan from high school to college
  • Work closely with faculty, staff, and administrations both at the service area high schools and off-campus higher education institutions to develop programs
  • Work with support staff from the various student services areas to ensure each is aware of and follows the academic and/or transition plan of each student

Program coordination

  • Support the planning, facilitation, and execution of Southwest Key college and career programs, including but not limited to Americorps VISTA and key components of Upward Bound annual programming, such as the School Year, Summer Academy, Summer Residential and Summer Bridge Program
  • Build a college-going culture of family engagement through coordination of family special events and programs
  • Develop community relationships with various partners in East Austin to promote program goals, participant recruitment, and development of a college-going culture in the East Austin community
  • Provide assistance, research, and data support to the Youth Services Coordinator to drive programming to increase the graduation, transition, persistence and the college completion of students
  • Regularly collect and analyze college and career data
  • Record all qualitative data (case notes, etc) and quantitative data (grades, GPAs, EFCs, employment, etc) into database for reporting


Other Functions:

Additional program management

  • Develop and maintain contacts with key stakeholders and related post-secondary institutions to provide feedback regarding academic rigor, school culture, and counseling services
  • Gain and maintain knowledge of all students' interests, needs and backgrounds
  • Keeps records and appropriate documentation of program activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications and Requirements:

Master's degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology and/or other related field

  • Texas Teaching Certificate
  • Three years of experience working with schools, higher education required or TRIO programs preferred Experience with personal, academic and career advising/counseling
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Experience in teaching both cognitive and non-cognitive skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data analysis for problem-solving
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work meritoriously as a member of a team
  • Strong background in working in communities of high-need
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Grant management experience preferred


Physical Demands:

Must be able to read, write, and communicate both verbally and in written form to express and exchange ideas. While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee must be able to access all components of work station and other office equipment. Frequent typing, writing, bending and twisting. Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds.



Work Environment:

General office and school environment with moderate noise. This position requires travel to program locations as needed. A busy environment with many unscheduled interruptions. Frequent computer use at workstation for extended periods of time. Public contact position requiring appropriate business apparel.
