CDS operates four dining units (Browne Dining Hall, Red Door Marketplace, Broad Cafe, and Avery Kitchen) for a campus community of 2000. We also serve over 850 students, 7 days a week, through our Meal Plan Program and maintain a burgeoning Catering Department.

Job Summary

The Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting the manager in the day-to-day operations of the Red Door Marketplace. In this position, the candidate will ensure that the manager's delegation of duties is being performed as required by all staff. The position will also be a point of contact and communication for customer related issues and inquiries. They will also assist the manager in ensuring a successful operation, to include, but not be limited to, employee management, ordering, tracking inventory, sanitation & safety, and food usage & waste management. Assists the manager in maintaining a strong team environment that exemplifies ownership, initiative, and communication. Ensures the unit is ready for service, staff has the tools and knowledge they need to do their jobs, and that all equipment is in good operating condition. The candidate must have strong communication skills, kitchen production experience, barista experience and the ability to handle stressful situations & conflict appropriately.

This is an Essential Reporting position. In the event of an emergency on campus, an employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery and is expected to report to Campus as soon as possible.

Essential Job Duties



  • Assist the manager in scheduling, assignments, and training.
  • Supervise and work with employees to ensure the unit is running well and efficiently.
  • Instruct employees in proper methods, techniques, and procedures throughout the operation (client relations, food production, barista, C-store)
  • Responsible for independently supervising the staff when the manager is not present.
  • Provide excellent customer service; listen to feedback and suggestions and address them with sound reasoning and rational judgement.
  • Ensure maximum standards of sanitation and food safety.
  • Assist in fostering a teamwork environment.
  • Perform daily assessments of staff & service and work with the manager to make improvements where needed.
  • Cultivate a positive and productive workplace by setting the example, communication, vision, teamwork, ownership, and positive attitude.
  • Ensures employee work areas are ready for servicing customers; coordinate support staff covering workstations.
  • Daily hands-on assistance in food production, barista service, and other duties for daily meal periods
  • Ensure that all kitchen equipment is in proper working condition.
  • Assist in ordering food and supplies based on inventory and projections.
  • May work varying shifts due to unforeseen events or department needs and may be required to work alternate or extra shifts per business needs.
  • Must be able to confront a challenge or adverse situation with calm, resolve, and an open, can-do attitude and positive mindset.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications



  • 2+ years food service experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Demonstrated team building ability.
  • ServSafe Certification or the ability to obtain certification immediately after hire.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods at a time, move, bend, twist, lift, push, pull, squat, reach, and walk with ease and with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Food & restaurant experience at a high-volume organization

Hiring Range

$24.00 - $29.25 per hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
