Summary:

The HHMI Communications department drives awareness of HHMI's brand and mission through external and internal communications, with emphasis on four overarching goals: 1) Communicate HHMI's commitment to discovery science across new and existing channels to inspire public trust and reinforce the value of basic scientific research; 2) Deepen HHMI's impact by helping to attract an increased pool of talent from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds; 3) Build and implement a Public Engagement program, and 4) Build and protect HHMI's identity and reputation.

The Manager of Visual Media Communications at HHMI will collaborate with the Director of Visual and Social Media Communications to shape the visual style of products, including video and photography, for both internal and external platforms. They will capture and edit high-quality content to produce engaging materials for various audiences and departments. Key responsibilities include supporting the Institute's Public Engagement program, social media, and web teams by creating compelling stories, short-form videos, and photography, while leading shoots both in-house and at HHMI-associated labs nationwide. They will ensure all visual assets align with departmental goals and objectives.

This position reports to the Director, Visual and Social Media Communications and is located at HHMI's headquarters. They will report in person 2 days a week to Chevy Chase, MD.

What you'll do:

Creative Strategy & Direction

  • Collaborate with the Director to define the visual presence of HHMI-owned channels.

  • Take part in content ideation and design of visual media products, with an emphasis on social-first content.

  • Collaborate within the Communications department and across the Institute to generate required content and ensure all reviews and clearances are completed.

Production & Editing

  • Plan, shoot, direct, and produce video and photographic content while managing associated budgets.

  • Edit raw footage and photographs into polished assets to ensure they are engaging and on-brand.

  • Manage pre and post-production activities from developing shot lists to finalizing projects and reviewing drafts to ensure products are high-quality.

Programmatic Support & Management

  • Help create Public Engagement workshops that provide presentation and on-camera training for HHMI scientists to deliver accessible narratives and content of their work.

  • Supervise one direct report, a Producer and Editor, who will assist with planning and execution of visual assets.

  • Additional management of contractors and external production teams as needed.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Film, Video Production, Photography, Communications, a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience editing/producing visual products, including video and photography assets.

  • At least 3 years of management experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a style that encourages open expressions of ideas and opinions.

  • Proficiency in balancing multiple tasks, prioritizing effectively, and delivering time-sensitive content with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work independently in a collaborative and dynamic environment.

  • Sound judgment and independent initiative.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.

Compensation Range

$113,986.40 (minimum) - $142,483.00 (midpoint) - $185,227.90 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
