Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Office of University Counsel (OUC) is seeking a Paralegal with a minimum of 7+ years' experience related to supporting OUC attorneys in medical professional liability litigation matters involving components of the UNM Health System and the employed health care providers working in the UNM Health System. Completed degrees from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirements may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

This position operates within a dynamic academic health center environment and requires knowledge, skills and abilities relative to State and Federal District Court rules and filing procedures, preparation of discovery responses, trial preparation, document and case management, calendaring, and online research, and technological adeptness and familiarity with the use of electronic databases and legal-use software. Qualified candidates must be organized and detail-oriented, with excellent computer and word processing skills and the ability to multi-task and work independently. Experience in summarizing medical records is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Be able to prepare routine/standard legal opinions and position statements for attorney review.
  • Be able to independently prepare standard contracts and settlement agreements for review of attorneys.
  • Be able to draft standard pleadings, discovery responses.
  • Be able to directly interact with other university departments on legal matters.
