Unit Clerk CNA, Harvard Care Center, Mercyhealth Harvard Hospital

- Day Shift Hours

- 64 hours / 2 weeks

Prepares records, processes orders and provides patient care, supporting the nursing philosophy. Orders unit specific special supplies and follows up on orders. Cares for patients in the hospital setting under direction of nursing staff, by performing the following duties, supporting the nursing philosophy. May include weekends, holidays, day, evening, night. Performs other duties as assigned.


Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answers the telephone and call lights in a professional, appropriate and timely manner, providing information or relaying messages to patients, family and partners.
  • Facilitates a welcoming environment assisting with visitor wayfinding.
  • Maintains a clean work and patient environment.
  • Participates in department or unit performance improvement activities.
  • Serves as a role model in Critical Moments of Service standards.
  • Brings concerns and/or new ideas forward to the unit manager to improve care on the unit, reporting staff behavioral concerns to management immediately.
  • Attends meetings for patient satisfaction (new products, processes, ideas, etc.).
  • Assist nursing and support service leadership in identifying process improvement opportunities as directed by leadership.
  • Oversees the new CNA and pool CNA team serving as a mentor to new hires and a resource to all CNA staff.
  • Supports newly hired CNA staff for a minimum of five shifts, increasing the orient's caseload as his/her progress and experience allows.
  • Observes and monitors CNA's patient assignment, providing input to Charge Nurse regarding assignments.
  • Oversees CNA orientation under the direction of the department educator, completing an orientation and competency check on new hire CNAs upon the completion of the orientation period.
  • Educates all newly hired CNA staff regarding departmental procedures, safety and health issues, and other information. Coaches for improvement and educates staff for results.
  • Ensures quality of services of CNA to patient and family, while working with support services to ensure quality of services on the unit (e.g., admissions, activities).
  • Provides constructive feedback and input to CNA staff during their 90 day and annual evaluations.
  • Provides patient care as assigned and per routine, according to standards of care, shift routines, and policies and procedures.
  • Provides patient comfort measures
  • Works as CNA as staffing requires.
  • Completes documentation as appropriate for any care provided (food consumption, bowel movements, movement, and other documentation as assigned)
  • Identifies and follows through with patients who have special needs or requests.
  • Serves as liaison to nursing management and the new CNA partner.
  • Orders special supplies that are unit specific and follows up on orders.
  • Processes orders and patient charges in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Verifies accuracy of charges entered for unit
  • Maintains medical records of current patients.
  • Fax and make copies as ordered by charge nurse.
  • Maintains supplies, including scanning, stocking, and ordering new supplies and disposing of expired or damaged supplies.
  • Work with communication tools to contact staff
  • Assemble patient folders and charts for unit
  • Keep white communication board updated.
  • Rauland responder/Vocera/versus set up for new staff
  • Payroll and scheduling for unit CNA
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

*Completion of a CNA program.
*CNA 2 (Advanced) program requirements met.
*Completion of a Unit Clerk course or equivalent on the job training (which can be provided).
*Previous healthcare CNA experience required minimum of 1year CNA or other healthcare experience. Phlebotomy experience preferred

Certification and Licensure

*Current CNA certificate in applicable state.
*Approved CPR or BLS certification within 90 days.

Special Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear, and use hands to handle, finger, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, steep, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs. and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Level of Supervision

Responsibilities include interviewing, and training CNAs; planning, assigning, and directing work.
