SCOPE OF WORK:
In this role, the New Roots Community Outreach intern will assist the New Roots Community Development Coordinator in creating and managing a multi-faceted community outreach plan. This includes marketing of produce, recruiting gardeners/farmers, developing content for all New Roots social media channels, networking both virtually and in person. The intern will also support events onsite at New Roots urban farm locations. Finally, the intern will support outreach and education of New Roots to the refugee community and greater Phoenix community.

Minimum Qualifications:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Gathering content, photo and video as well as testimonials from farmers
  • Regular posts on IG and FB
  • Contributing to educational programming and marketing around our aquaponics greenhouse
  • Assisting with group volunteer days
  • Passing out flyers at community events
  • Joining discussions with staff about outreach plans
  • Alerting New Roots Staff of any issues that may come up at the garden
  • Assisting growers as needed with personal farm business outreach plans

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The intern will learn the following skills:

  • Develop a working knowledge of the New Roots Program and how it operates
  • Create, plan and execute an outreach strategy for non-profit program development
  • Conduct targeted outreach for refugee farmers/gardeners
  • Build outreach skills with residents as well as many non-English speaking farmers.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A strong passion for and knowledge of food and farming issues
  • Outgoing personality that is comfortable talking with the public
  • Web design, Social Media, Advertising/Marketing experience
  • Course work or volunteer equivalent in non-profit management preferred
  • Prior experience working with refugees, immigrant or pre-literate populations in non-traditional setting preferred
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills required
  • A flexible schedule and ability to travel to CamelBackyard site
  • Ability to work events that include some weekends and nights

This position reports to the New Roots Community Development Coordinator
