Principal Model Based Systems Engineer / Technical Lead

LinQuest Corporation
life insurance, paid time off, tuition reimbursement
United States, Virginia, Arlington
Oct 25, 2024
Description

LinQuest is seeking Principal Model Based Systems Engineer / Technical Leadto support Headquarters, US Air Force (HAF) A5/7, Air Force Futures (AFF), at both client sites in the Pentagon/JBAB and telework sites in the National Capital Region. An active DoD Secret clearance with eligibility to obtain TS/SCI is required.

The applicant will lead a team that employs Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). MBSE utilizes digital Mission Thread (MT) and Mission Engineering Thread (MET) models to provide a mission context to concept exploration, capability development, and throughout the systems engineering and acquisitions life cycles. MT models capture the sequence of operational objectives and tasks to achieve a desired mission effect. METs include the technical details of the capabilities and systems assigned to execute the mission. MBSE allows for virtual integration of innovative concepts and will streamline analysis to support planning and programming decisions.

MBSE is used to support the analysis of HAF A5/7 (AFF) concepts and requirements to assist with the development of Program Objective Memorandum (POM) recommendations. Such recommendations are based on coherent, analytically-sound evidence as captured in credible, validated digital models. Models are used to facilitate robust collaborations among Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the three Centers of AFF and across stakeholder organizations, such as HAF A8 and A9, AFRL, and the Space Force. Models of the different AF missions and functions form constituent parts of a Mission Architecture that over time can become an Authoritative Source of Truth (ASoT) about future AF operations.

  • Engage with Analysis Team leadership to prioritize focus areas of MBSE efforts supporting AFF organizations.
  • Determine data needed to support prioritized MBSE focus areas.
  • Conduct modeling sessions to build SME-informed future MT models, consistent with guidance from Joint Warfighting Concepts, National Defense Strategy, National Military Strategy, Joint Force Operating Scenarios, and other authoritative sources identified by AFF SMEs.
  • Incrementally build the Mission Architecture as described in the Mission Engineering Guide through development of MT and MET models using commercial-off-the-shelf visual modeling tools, such as Magic Draw/Cameo.
  • Maintain awareness of concurrent activities by working in a common modeling database across the organization.
  • Define and incorporate mission success parameters against which candidate solutions can be measured (i.e., Measures of Success/ Effectiveness/ Performance).
  • Develop MET models to define where innovative solutions (materiel and/or non-materiel) may be integrated into operations to ensure mission success.
  • Model vignettes to provide context for analytical studies - include blue capability and red threat models within the operational environment.
  • Use analytical models to perform comparative analysis of current and emerging operational and system capabilities and combinations thereof.
  • Export unambiguous future mission engineering models to guide in-depth analysis, research, and acquisition - machine-readable to external stakeholders, as required by the client.
  • Incorporate updates into the Mission Architecture.
  • Establish common data model across all MT/MET models.
  • Research and advocate for access to appropriate tools and collaborative environments to enable the digital model centric transformation in the client organization, as directed in by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Digital Engineering Strategy.
  • Research digital engineering and MBSE best practices and maintain repository of resources to guide client organization during the digital transformation.
  • Guide efforts to create and extend system models using existing requirements, interface documentation, and related design and systems engineering documents.
  • Expert level support for framing conceptual challenges, developing and documenting methodologies to model, simulate, and analyze those challenges.
  • Communicate (both written and verbal) clear insights and observations based on complex analytical models and technical data interpretation to senior-level leadership and external customers.
  • Collaborate with a range of organizations and customers to obtain necessary authoritative data, analytic techniques, and assumptions so that results from the above activities remain consistent with the general analytic community.
  • Lead technical support and knowledge transfer as needed.
  • Provide MBSE and SysML or UML expertise and related support.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Applied Math, Computer Science, Operations Research, Statistics, or related fields
  • 10+ years of Systems Engineering experience.
  • SysML and/or Unified Architecture Framework (UAF)
  • CAMEO, and/or Sparx Enterprise Architect (EA)
  • Experience with developing models and data analysis to inform executive decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in cross-functional planning, coordination and task execution situations involving the full spectrum of systems engineering and integration activities.
  • Hands-on technical drive and accountability.
  • Should be adept at breaking complex problems into manageable elements and identifying candidate solutions for each.
  • Must have the ability and motivation to expand their knowledge of various analytic tools and techniques and are expected to seek out opportunities to improve processes and share knowledge with the teammates.
  • Basic knowledge/experience in Joint warfighting capabilities, advanced weapons, current and future operational concepts.
  • Applicants should have experience in the research, analysis, and application of operations research techniques to more than one problem type.
  • Collaborate well with a diverse group of skill sets and backgrounds.
  • High motivation, creativity, and flexibility to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communicator.
  • US citizenship.
  • DoD Secret with eligibility to obtain TS/SCI.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • DoD TS/SCI+ eligibility within the last 12 months.
  • Advanced Degrees in Engineering, Applied Math, Computer Science, Operations Research, Statistics, or related fields.
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more of the following: Air Force program domain knowledge in the ground and/or space segment areas.
  • Experience working with USAF, DoD Stakeholders.
  • Object Management Group (OMG)-Certified Systems Modeling Professional (OCSMP) Level III Certification.
