Bioinformatician (Research Assistant Professor)
Department of Medical Oncology

The West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine, located in Morgantown, WV, seeks an innovative, dynamic, and collaborative researcher and mentor to serve as Bioinformatician (Research Assistant Professor) non-tenure in the Department of Medical Oncology in the Cancer Institute.

The Bioinformatician will be responsible for reviewing and extracting data collected from researchers at the Department of Medical Oncology. This role involves providing programming services, responding to inquiries, and independently resolving matters of low to moderate complexity. The position requires judgment, resourcefulness, and originality.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Review files and compile necessary information for the online database.
  • Enter and correct alphabetic and numeric data.
  • Operate office equipment such as photocopiers and shredders as needed.
  • Assist functional and executive staff with service preparation and provision.
  • Consult on needs, make suggestions, and assess outcomes for quality and compliance.
  • Coordinate tasks and projects with another on-site bioinformatics technician.
  • Research, compose, type, read, sort, code, process, transmit, and file documents.
  • Maintain knowledge of professional principles, legal requirements, and industry standards.
  • Develop or maintain applications for processing biologically based data into searchable databases.
  • Enter or retrieve information from structural databases.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Understanding of plant and animal organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, and interactions.
  • High perceptual speed for comparing similarities and differences among sets of data.
  • Proficiency in administrative and clerical procedures, including word processing and managing files.
  • Knowledge of electronic equipment and computer software applications.
  • Strong logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple correspondence.
  • Effective presentation skills in one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


An on-campus office is provided, with opportunities for hybrid work.
