POSITION OVERVIEW:

The certified oncology pharmacy technician is responsible to compound both non-hazardous and hazardous sterile IV preparations. He/she must stay up to date and use excellent technique in complying with all requirements of USP 797 and 800 regulations. Must be able to perform basic math calculations. He/she is responsible to clean each item and restock IV clean room supplies. Technician should be able to perform monthly terminal cleaning (ceiling to floor) and carry heavy boxes of IV bags, both of which are physically demanding. He/she is responsible to manually charge for medications dispensed to oncology clinic patients. The pharmacy technician is responsible for ordering and maintaining supplies for nursing staff and may deliver items to other departments. The pharmacy technician will restock ordered medications and ensure stock is not expired. He/she is responsible to maintain all necessary records including invoices, pressure logs and clean room logs. The job involves use of databases and medical software. A pharmacy technician needs good customer service skills and knowledge of drug properties. Accuracy and attention to detail on the part of a pharmacy technician could be a life-and-death matter. Additional duties may include obtaining prior authorization, securing financial assistance and performing all aspects of dispensing oral cancer medication as a service of the oncology department. This will include ordering, maintaining inventory, billing insurance, collecting copays and dispensing.

EDUCATION:



  • High school diploma
  • National certification as Pharmacy Technician and registration with Montana Board of Pharmacy as Certified Technician upon hire.


EXPERIENCE:



  • Required to have at least 6 months of active experience as a pharmacy technician or experience deemed as equivalent by the board.
  • Oncology experience, preferred


LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:



  • Current registration with Montana Board of Pharmacy as Certified Pharmacy Technician.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:



  • Knowledge of personal computers, hardware, basic software programs including word processing and spreadsheets.
  • must possess strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to refer to policy manual for specific instructions/guidelines.
  • Follow established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to adhere to the standards of the job description.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility to adapt to a variety of workload assignments and ability to work independently
