Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Dialysis Technician are critical members of the team who maintains the environment, including water treatment and equipment according to SBUH, Manufacturer, DOH, CMS, JC and AAMI specifications. Repairs and maintains equipment according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Oversees the nursing assistants related to their technical role, and collaborates with the nursing staff related to the technical operations of the unit. In addition, collectively works with other departments (e.g. plumbing, plant management, electricians, housekeeping, and respiratory) for services required for the daily operation of the unit. Furthermore, works efficiently and effectively with the Medical, Nursing and Technical staff. Manages inventory supplies on the dialysis unit, as well as in the Pavilion. Also, maintains an inventory of all dialysis equipment in the Towers, and the Pavilion. This position has overnight and Sunday on-call responsibilities.

Manage the preparation, operation, cleaning, repair, and maintenance of the Dialysis equipment, including all equipment related to the reverse osmosis system, central delivery system, and bicarbonate mixer, and maintenance of logs. Setting up/Taking down the dialysis machine for patient use including spiking the normal saline, priming, checking connection of the dialyzer, discarding used dialysis lines and all subsequent steps on dialysis unit and patient bedside. Assigns and supervises the nursing assistants who are performing technical duties related to the technical operation of the dialysis unit. Orders and maintains supplies in the Hospital Dialysis Unit, as well as the Pavilion. Maintains all aspects of water quality, including logs in accordance with NYDOH, ESRD and federal guidelines.

Duties of a Dialysis Technician may include the following but are not limited to:



  • Oversee's the overall technical operation of the Dialysis Unit, including the Reverse Osmosis Room under the direct supervision of the Chief Technician.
  • Performs required maintenance on machines, as directed.
  • Collects cultures on dialysis equipment, maintains logs, and communicates abnormal results with Chief Technician, Nurse Manager and Medical Director.
  • Performs disinfection of machines, and central delivery system, as directed.
  • Communicates with Baxter for repairs and maintenance, as needed.
  • Performs tests/tasks related to normal dialysis operation and maintains logs daily.
  • Collaborates with the nursing staff to ensure safe and timely dialysis treatments.
  • Attends bi-weekly Renal Dialysis meetings and communicates abnormal test result with the Medical Director, as needed.
  • Supervises nursing assistant staff related to technical duties they have been deemed competent to perform independently.
  • Conducts in-services, and educational opportunities, and is a resource for all dialysis staff.



This position will require the selected candidate to work in various environments throughout the facility (Towers, Pavilion, Acute Dialysis Unit, Small Technician Lab). This candidate selected for this position will also need to have the ability to move dialysis machines and portable r/o machines and able to lift a minimum of 70 pounds.

Qualifications

Required: Associate's degree. At least 2 years of general Dialysis experience. Minimum 2 years of Hemodialysis experience in an acute/chronic care setting. Knowledge of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) and peritoneal dialysis. Basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting. Must be able to work harmoniously with the dedicated renal healthcare team. Excellent interpersonal, communication and written skills. Excellent multi-tasking skills. Works well with others, can work independently, and motivated to learn and can be flexible.

Preferred: 5 years of Dialysis experience in acute/chronic dialysis unit. Possess the ability to work independently with acute renal patients. Maintains critical care skills and Dialysis/Renal certification. Biomedical degree. Inpatient Acute care* Dialysis experience. Chronic Dialysis experience. Microsoft Office experience. Bonnet, Gambro Phoenix, Prisma-flex and/or Water Treatment certifications.

*Acute care is defined as medical services provided for illnesses that are short-term (usually less than 30 days), intense, and have a relatively severe to very severe course, requiring knowledge and expertise in the vigilant monitoring of subtle changes in the patient's condition, as well as ability to quickly recognize and identify potential problems and conditions resulting from a previous disease.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $28.00 - $34.00 / hourly.

The above salary range represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate's validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
